Cyclist hit by car in downtown Reno, Nevada.

The thing I worry about even more is someone I love getting hit by a car, since my wife, sisters, brother-in-law and most of my friends ride around town a lot.
That second fear materialized yesterday when I got a call from my sister saying she got T-Boned by a car on her bike. She was riding East on Fourth Street when a westbound car turning south onto Lake hit her at the front wheel. She went over the car, by far the preferable vector, hit the windshield with her helmeted head and onto the ground. Hit her head twice, both times protected by the helmet. She said she remembered the impacts and that they didn’t hurt at all. The helmet is in ok shape. Scuffed and cracked a little. Certainly needs to be replaced.
The driver and several others stopped immeadiately, called police and EMTs. They patched her up with bandages, though she wasn’t actually bleeding anywhere. Everything on the wrap-up went well. The driver got a ticket and has insurance.
Her bike is a little messed up. The front wheel bearings are running rough indicating a bent axle, which means that the carbon forks are ruined. The rear wheel is out of true and the driveside chainstay is bent. Various other scratches and scuffs, but not horrible. She can’t ride it at least.
I had prepared a lecture for her about wearing a helmet, but thankfully she had already started wearing one regularly. For those of you who think a helmet can’t help you in a car-bike collision: you’re dead fucking wrong.

Glad to hear she’s doing well. That’s a legit crash, and one that you hope never to see. What is it with people not wearing helmets? I’m seeing more and more of it, it seems, and I can’t fathom just cruising around without one.

I am so glad to hear she is OK! Mike I could not agree with you more. HELMETS ARE MANDATORY! I know I’m an “old guy” and wearing a helmet on your fixie isn’t cool but I commute quite a bit from Suburbia to work(good old Pyramid highway) and even at night sometimes and sometimes it gets a little scary. Helmets will not always save your life but they sure do help making our life last a little longer. Please wear helmets guys, it always sucks to hear cyclists being killed by motorists. Peace ya’all…

Thanks to my two wonderful brothers, I started wearing my helmet and had a new one to use. I clearly remember hitting my head twice and thinking each time, “wow, that didn’t hurt”. The doctor said the swelling in my knees is just some popped blood vessels and veins bleeding and the cuts aren’t deep enough to worry about. I think I got off pretty lucky. Thanks Mike and Dave. I love you!

Holy sheee-ite. I saw the link, and assumed the worst. I am so relieved that she’s okay. Whew! Seriously, I am soooo relieved. Okay, I feel better now…

Hmmm … rethinking my habit of only wearing a helmet on singletrack.
Scary story, good outcome. (That guy better pay for the fork/wheel/helmet/EMTs — and send some flowers!)

Glad to hear your sister is okay, and also smart.
I crashed on my Nishiki once. Went straight over the handlebars and was knocked out for the entire time it took the ambulance to get there. But I was wearing a helmet. Despite losing some teeth, removing the entire ride side of my face, and forever being left with asphalt in my nose and under my eye, I am certain that my helmet either saved my life or at least prevented me from living out the rest of my life with some serious brain damage. I never ride without a helmet!

You know, Callie only recently started wearing a helmet. When she moved to reno she was eager to start riding her bike to work, but not eager to take on the dreaded “helmet-hair”, a consequence more tolerable for some then for others. At first she rode from the university all the way to south Reno with a vulnerable bean. The turning point came when we got her a cute new cap to cover her matted locks at work.
This summer I’ve noticed a lot of girls riding their bikes around town, more than I remember seeing in the past. Fantastic! No longer the sausage-fest cycling was thought (by some) to be. And these girls are totally styling in their tank-tops and tight rolled up jeans and their fluffy hair blowin’ in the wind. Yes, totally stylin’. I’m just concerned that a component of that style is the helmet-less-ness of it. But lets face it (mike) not an insignificant portion of the appeal of cycling is the fashion, even for guys. I mean, dudes wearing knickers? Ca’mon! If there wasn’t a pair of clip-less shoes at the end of those overexposed calves or a gnarly raspberry from an aggressive mtb ride, you would say “Euro-stylin’’ in Reno?” But, as with many other unfortunate fashion mishaps, the man-pri has stuck. So should the helmet. But it’s tough, I mean, the lady rider wants to have fun while commuting, be aggressive and strong and beautiful. So when we ride our bikes to work or to a party or to lunch, the grunge look doesn’t always work for everyone. And if you look around at all the exposed noggins riding around town, I think I’m not the only one with these concerns; I sure can’t think of any other reason for going helmet-less.
So hopefully we’ll move away from the idea that long, fluffy hair blowin’ in the wind while riding a bike is cool, and admire the riders sportin’ Giros, and tell the chick with helmet-hair that it’s hot, because, I think we can all agree that being fed cream of wheat through you nose sure isn’t that cool, and I hear that’s what they do to vegi’s.

i am relieved to hear the “happy ending” to this one, Callie. kudos to you for taking that ounce of prevention. we can only speculate about the alternative consequence. you now stand among the ranks of “those who ride that have been hit” - a far sight better than “those who don’t/can’t ride because they were hit.” i’d wager a bet that 9/10 pedalers you see without helmets are in the “those who ride who haven’t yet been hit” club.
i hope the knee and bruises go away soon and that you’re comfortable riding in traffic again someday. if not, the trails are always there.

Glad to hear Callie’s ok. Just makes me sick. Way too many bike/car “incidents” this year…
